Our Heritage

A Legacy Born of the Hills

Founded in the Adelaide Hills at Birdwood, Mylkappa Wines is a family legacy born from a deep love for the Adelaide Hills and the vine. For generations, we have dedicated ourselves to the art of cool-climate viticulture, meticulously crafting elegant wines that capture the unique spirit of our land and micro climate . Geoff, Pat and their daughter Caralyn are heavily involved in the vineyard and the Cellar Door.

Our philosophy is simple:  Good wine starts on the vine.   We focus on the vineyard , with suitable varieties and clones.  Viticultural practices ensure  we produce quality grapes that shape our small batch wine.  Every bottle of wine we produce is a testament to our commitment to viticulture, sustainable practices, and the heritage of this extraordinary landscape.

The Terroir of the Adelaide Hills

Our vineyard is defined by its unique high-altitude climate and mineral-rich ancient soils. Every block is meticulously managed  to ensure we produce grapes that reach their potential, expressing elegance, complexity, and distinct regional character.

Work and Play

Pat and Geoff's motto, has always been "Work Hard and have a laugh along the way ". The family helped establish the vineyard in 1998 and 1999. Many weekends were spent preparing the vineyard, long days of picking rocks, putting out posts, laying wire and eventually planting. Nights were spent at the old farm house, often with the neighbours two dogs turning up Friday night and returning home Sunday evening when we left !  There was hard work, plenty of laughs and wow ,did we get bogged ! More times than we care to remember !   In the early days, family and friends helped with the harvest.  After harvest Pat and Geoff invited all to a harvest party held at the vineyard. These days it is a bit different, but we always remember fondly, how it started.

Hand-Harvesting

Always hard work, definitely requires some refreshments for the team afterwards.  Some still have plenty of energy !

Work Hard, Have Fun

Dinner for the Harvest workers

Some years we predominantly machine harvest and some others we require a large team for hand picking.  This was a fabulous bunch  from France.  Pat and Geoff insisted on providing a great meal and wine at the conclusion of harvest.
